Creating Better Ice Conditions with Desiccant Dehumidification

The Campbellton Memorial Civic Centre is a multi-sport recreation and event facility in Campbellton, New Brunswick, with ice surfaces used for hockey and other community activities. Preparing the ice season as early as August means the facility can still face warm temperatures and high outdoor humidity, creating challenging conditions as temperatures inside the arena are lowered. Since 2024, the Civic Centre has used desiccant dehumidification during this early-season period to manage excess moisture, reduce condensation and support the conditions needed to create and maintain a consistent ice surface.

Moisture monitoring for timber durability research

Université Laval conducted a durability study for Parc du Massif du Sud in collaboration with Goodfellow and Latéral to evaluate the performance of different coating and protection systems applied to hybrid glued-laminated timber (glulam) beams intended for exterior exposure conditions. Led by Professor of Timber Engineering, Alexander Salenikovich, eng., Ph. D., alongside Master’s Student Coralie Offroy, the two-month research program compared different wood coatings by monitoring moisture content, modulus of elasticity (MOE), and visible signs of deterioration under cyclic environmental conditions simulating accelerated exterior exposure. The objective was to evaluate the coatings’ effectiveness in enhancing timber durability and long-term performance.

Controlling moisture and humidity conditions in a paper manufacturing plant

A large paper manufacturing facility in Quebec has been dedicated to producing high-quality paper rolls used across the region. The cardboard cores used for winding these rolls must remain dimensionally stable to support reliable production and consistent product performance.

Managing moisture at mass timber student housing project

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) in British Columbia is expanding its Abbotsford Campus with several buildings including student housing. Clark Builders, a division of Turner Construction, is leading the construction of the 400-bed six-story residence set to open in 2025. The 149,400-square-foot hybrid structure is comprised of reinforced concrete, mass timber, and light wood framing. The UFV Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) team was keen to incorporate a multi-faceted humidity control system into the temporary heating plan to ensure optimal conditions were maintained for the light wood framing and cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor system throughout the winter months.
